Cow ( Abiding the Æther)

Damien Hirst cut cows in two (Mother and Child, Divided). Here I am, piecing them together.
The ancient Egyptians mummified bodies to ensure the soul’s survival in the afterlife, believing the body was essential for resurrection. Using the discarded hide of several cows (reclaimed floor rugs from ebay), I have reconnected the skin with the skeletal frame of an oversized cow.
A musculoskeletal sculpture that moves like a real body. I was influenced by George Bataille’s document ‘Abattoirs’ and Eli Lotar’s photographs that accompanied the essay. The abattoir has replaced the site of ritual, and society has turned its gaze away from the reality of killing animals.
I’m exploring themes of repair, re-membering and re-connecting; the sacred and the profane.
